Dr. Carlos Castaño obtained the title of Physician and Surgeon on July 11, 1986 by the Technological University of Pereira (UTP) (Colombia). He was Assistant Professor of the Anatomy Chair at the University of Technology of Pereira (Colombia) (1988). He specialized in Neurosurgery at the Vall d'Hebron University Hospital (Barcelona) (1988-1993), obtaining the title of Specialist Physician in Neurosurgery. He also obtained a PhD in Medicine and Surgery from the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB), on May 18, 1992. He specialized in Radiology at the Bellvitge University Hospital (Barcelona) (1995-1998), obtaining the title of Medical Specialist in Radiodiagnosis.
He completed training stays (Fellowship) in Interventional Neuroradiology at the University of California in Los Angeles (UCLA) - USA (1998-1999) with Professor Fernando Vi.uela; and at the Center Hospitalier Universitaire de Bic.tre, Paris-France (2002) with Professor Pierre Lasjaunias.
He developed the Interventional Radiology/Neuroradiology unit and from 1999 to 2007 he was clinical head of the Interventional Radiology-Neuroradiology Unit at the Hospital Universitari de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau (Barcelona). He also developed the interventionist Neuroradiology unit and since 2007 he is the clinical head of the Interventional Neuroradiology Unit at the Germans Trias i Pujol University Hospital (Badalona).
He has made more than 370 presentations, communications and publications, at national and international congresses, symposia and magazines.
On 28 July 2006 he published the book entitled "Interventionist Neuroradiology", which is a recognized treatise on this subspeciality.
He is an associate clinical professor, in the subject of Neurology-Neurosurgery of MIC-4, of the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB).
Throughout his career, he has participated in training in Radiology and Interventional Neuroradiology (NRI) of medical specialists, residents (of different specialties) and nursing. She has participated in multiple research projects, including: SENTIS, STAR, REVASCAT, DAWN, FÚRIES, CHOICE, SWIFT DIRECT, PROOF, PROMISE, SELECT-2, APRIL, MORPHEUS, ROSSETTI, DISTAL, SEMTIC, VESTA, ESTABLISHMENT OF AN ISCHEMIC STROKE MODEL IN PIGS. He has pioneered the endovascular treatment of ischaemic stroke with the implementation of the mechanical thromboectomy technique with "stentrievers".
On 26 August 2009 he received the highest distinction in recognition of his professional career ("Distingly graduated") from the Pereira University of Technology (UTP).
He is a member of the WFITN (World Federation of Interventional and Therapeutic Neuroradiology), and GENI (Spanish Group of Interventional Neuroradiology).
