Recerca:
The unit actively participates in various investigative groups, as both sponsor, and in collaboration with other teams such as The Clinical Institute for Neurosciences or the Research Institute of the Hospital of Santa Creu and Sant Pau.
These form part of the seven research projects, three of which are financed by FIS, another is financed by the La Morat at TV3 and the other by a European project called Ambient Assisted Living.
Presentation:
The unit actively participates in the diagnosis, treatment and genetic counselling of these neurodegenerative diseases that mainly affect the central nervous system. For example:
- Cognitive deterioration in collaboration with the Neuropsychology Unit
- Extrapiramidal:diagnosis and medical treatment of illnesses characterised by mobility disorders.
- Neurogenetic:in collaboration with the Neuropsychology unit in the area of Neurosciences and the Germans Trias Genetic Program.
- Functional surgery for mobility disorders: in collaboration with the Neurosurgery Services and the Neuropsychology Unit in the area of Neurosciences.

Undergraduate teaching
The unit forms part of a teaching program for Undergraduates at the Can Ruti Campus, UAB.
Postgraduate teaching
It also forms part of the teaching program for Doctors of Neurology at Germans Trias and organises an annual course on functional surgery for mobility disorders for Neurosurgeons. Similarly it is part of the teaching programs for various masters degrees.

Consultations for neurodegenerative illnesses
- Consultations for extrapiramidal illnesses
- Consultations for cognitive deficiencies
Diagnostic procedures for outpatients
- electrophysiological movement study: electrophysiological study of the characteristics of the mobility disorders using electrodes attached to the skin. Allowing the identification of the disorders and helps with the diagnosis.
- Transcranial ecograph: uses ultrasound to to study the intracranial structures that are characteristic of different illnesses.
Day Clinic diagnostic procedures
L-DOPA and apomorphine test: consists of quantifying, using clinical scales for the response to different treatments. these are essential in the diagnosis of those patients with Parkinson's Disease, to non-conventional therapies such as perfusion pumps or deep brain stimulation.
Therapeutic procedures
Using botulinum toxin:symptomatic treatment of deficiency in mobility, fundamentally dystonia, by the intramuscular administration of botulinum toxin.
Therapeutic procedures
- Non-conventional treatment of Parkinson's Disease
Deep brain stimulation
Apomorphine perfusion pump
Duodopa perfusion pump
- Surgical treatment of the mobility disorders using deep brain neurostimulation.
Hospitalisation
- aetiological study (of the causes) of neurodegenerative diseases.
- Post operative control of patients with deep brain stimulation.
Consultation
- Evaluation and close monitoring of those patients that are candidates for deep brain stimulation and those that are following this course of therapy.
- Evaluation and monitoring of those patients following non-conventional treatment for Parkinson's Disease.
- Neurogenetic consultation
- Genetic counselling
Extraction of biological samples
- Biopsy of the skin and fibroblast cultures (a type of connective tissue cell)
- Taking blood samples to study the DNA or the RNA
Diagnostic procedures
• Genetic study of the mobility disorders and dementia
Dementia
Alzheimer's disease: APOE, APP, PSEN1, PSEN2
Frontotemporal dementias : MAPT, GRN, TARDBP, FUS, C9orf72
