Presentation:
The Neurology Service has the mission of providing the comprehensive and quality diagnosis and treatment of neurological diseases to the population of Barcelonès Nord and Maresme. And, as part of the Neurosciences area, it also has the mission of providing a portfolio of tertiary or high-complexity services in the same geographical area and in the counties of Girona, always seeking the well-being of patients and excellence.
The Neurology Service integrates patient care in emergencies, hospitalisation, the Stroke Unit, the Epilepsy Monitoring Unit, consultations and functional testing offices, and collaborates with other members of the Neurosciences area in the highly complex processes mentioned in the services portfolio of the Clinical Directorate of Neurosciences. It has specialized units in the diagnosis and treatment of stroke, neuroimmunology and multiple sclerosis, neurodegenerative diseases, dementias and movement disorders, epilepsy and sleep disorders, neuromuscular diseases, headaches and neuropsychology.

Undergraduate Teaching
The Neurology Service participates in the training of students of the 5th year of the Degree of Medicine of the UAB at the Can Ruti Campus. The teacher responsible for this training is Dr. Mill'n. In addition, students in the 5th and 6th year of the Degree in Medicine carry out internships supervised by neurology specialists at the hospitalization plant, stroke unit and external consultations.
Postgraduate Teaching
The service participates in the training of residents of the speciality. Currently three are incorporated every year. The resident tutors are Dr. Lucente, Dr. Gomis and Dr. Ispierto. During the first year, residents carry out rotations in the services of Internal Medicine, Cardiology, Intensive Medicine, Psychiatry, Neurosurgery and Emergencies. Subsequently, they carry out specific rotations of the specialty in the service itself and in national and international external centers.
In addition, the service participates in the training of residents of other specialties who carry out rotations in Neurology: Internal Medicine, ICU, Family and Community Medicine, Endocrinology and Nutrition, Rehabilitation and Neurosurgery. It also welcomes residents from other national and international hospitals as well as general neurologists and other specialists for their specific training in specialized units.

Nervous system diseases
The specialty of Neurology encompasses different diseases of the central nervous system (brain or spinal cord), peripheral (nerve roots, nerves or muscles) and autonomous.
They are very common pathologies and are associated with high morbidity, disability and mortality. Some of the most common are the following: dementias (such as Alzheimer's disease and other neurodegenerative disorders); strokes (haemorrhages and brain infarctions, also known as embolies); movement disorders ( Parkinson's disease, tremors, dystonias); cephaleraees (disappropriates); multiple sclerosis and other demyelinating diseases
Diagnosis of neurological diseases
The diagnosis of neurological diseases is based on the clinical history of the patient, the directed neurological examination and, where necessary, the performance of different diagnostic tests according to clinical suspicion such as cranial CT, cranial and spinal magnetic resonance, electroencephalogram, ultrasound studies, brain arteriography, electromyography, the potentials evoked by lorraine puncture, etc.
